Nanako Nakajima, Ph.D, was born and raised in Tokyo. She is a certified traditional Japanese dance（odori）master, a visiting scholar at Tisch School NYU 06. She submitted her Ph.D. dissertation entitled as the Aging Body in Dance at Freie Universität Berlin. Since 2011, she had been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Saitama University, and a Fellow of the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” at Freie Universität Berlin. She is a Valeska-Gert Visiting Professor 2019/20, Freie Universität Berlin.
She has worked as a dance dramaturg with NY downtown artists and Nanako’s dramaturgical work with luciana achugar, ‘Exhausting Love at Danspace Project’, was awarded 06-07 New York Dance and Performance Awards (‘The Bessies’). Nanako received 2017 Special Commendation of Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy from the Literary Manager and Dramaturgs of the Americas.
Her recent research-dramaturgy projects include “Dance Archive Boxes @TPAM2016,” “Yvonne Rainer Performative Exhibition” at Kyoto Art Theater Shunju-za 2017（http://www.nanakonakajima.com/rainer/）, Wang Mengfan’s piece with retired revolutionary ballet dancers at Wuzhen Theatre Festival, China, 2019, “Dance Archive Box Berlin” at Akademie der Künste Berlin, 2020, “Noh to Trio A” at Nagoya Noh Theater, 2021. Her publications include The Aging Body in Dance (co-edit. by Gabriele Brandstetter, Routledge, 2017), and Oi to Odori (Aging plus Dancing (co-edit. by Kikuko Toyama, Keiso Shobo, 2019）, and currently she is writing her monograph on dance dramaturgy. In 2022, she invited Mengfan Wang in Beijing for her project in Kyoto and presented the public showing「Encountering Histories／型の向こうへ」together with Noh performer at Senshu-Hall. In 2022, she was invited both to a leading international performing arts festival Kyoto Experiment for her screening-lecture series “Forever Postmodern Dance’ and to Tokyo Festival as mentor for their Farm-Lab Exhibition program. In 2022 Autumn, Nanako was invited to a globally respected arts, cultural and educational institution, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Canada, as faculty member, and supported the internationally selected dance companies during their dance residence program.

ダンス研究者、ダンスドラマトゥルク。博士（舞踊学）。ベルリン自由大学に提出した論文the Aging Body in Danceで博士号を取得後、日本学術振興会特別研究員（PD）として埼玉大学に赴任、ベルリン自由大学国際パフォーマンス研究センターInterweaving Performane Culturesリサーチ・フェローを経て、各地の大学で教鞭をとりながらドラマトゥルクとして国内外で活躍する。ニューヨークダウンタウンダンスの振付家ルチアナ・アーギュラーとの作品 Exhausting Love at Danspace Project は2006／07年ニューヨーク・ベッシー賞を受賞、2017年にはアメリカドラマトゥルク協会からエリオットヘイズ賞特別賞を受ける。日本舞踊宗家藤間流師範。
老いと踊りの研究を実践と並行して進め、近年のプロジェクトに「イヴォンヌ・レイナーを巡るパフォーマティヴ・エクシビジョン」（京都芸術劇場春秋座、2017、報告サイトhttp://www.nanakonakajima.com/rainer/）、老いた革命バレエダンサーの新作（演出・振付メンファン・ワン、烏鎮演劇祭2019）、能楽師とダンサーとのレクチャーパフォーマンス「能からTrio Aへ」（名古屋能楽堂、2021）がある。ダンスドラマトゥルギーの普及のために情報サイト（http://www.dancedramaturgy.org）を開設。

2019年にはドイツ、ベルリン自由大学ヴァレスカ・ゲルト記念招聘教授2019／20に着任し「ダンスアーカイブボックスベルリン」をベルリン芸術アカデミーで発表。2022年8月には自らの企画に北京から演出家メンファン・ワンを招き、能楽師らと共に京都千秋堂において公開ショーイング「型の向こうへ／Encountering Histories」を開催。2022年は Kyoto Experiment 京都国際舞台芸術祭で「フォーエバーポストモダンダンス」スクリーニングレクチャーを開催し、東京芸術祭では Farm-Lab Exhibiton のメンターを務めた。また2022年秋に、世界的に評価の高いカナダの芸術文化教育施設バンフセンター・フォー・アーツ・アンド・クリエイティビティにファカルティ・メンバーとして招かれ、世界中から選ばれたダンスカンパニーの滞在制作を支えるドラマトゥルクに着任した。現在、ダンスドラマトゥルギーの単著を執筆中。
