Nanako Nakajima, PhD, is a dance scholar and dramaturg based in Japan. She is Associate Professor of Dance Studies and Dance Dramaturgy in the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences at Waseda University. She is also a certified master of traditional Japanese dance (odori) in the Sōke Fujima school.

Nakajima received her doctorate from Freie Universität Berlin with a dissertation on the aging body in dance. She subsequently worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science at Saitama University and as a Research Fellow at the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” at Freie Universität Berlin. In 2019–20, she returned to Freie Universität Berlin as Valeska Gert Visiting Professor.

As a pioneer in the field of dance dramaturgy, Nakajima has collaborated with artists across Asia, Europe, and North America. She has worked frequently with major international performing arts platforms in Japan, including Festival/Tokyo and its successor, Tokyo Festival; Kyoto Experiment; and the Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama (TPAM, now YPAM), contributing as a dramaturg, curator, program director, mentor, lecturer, and project initiator. Her dramaturgical work with Luciana Achugar on Exhausting Love at Danspace Project received a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) in 2006–07. In 2017, Nakajima received a Special Commendation of the Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy from the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas.

Her research and artistic practice focus on dance dramaturgy, aging bodies, intercultural performance, and the relationship between archives and embodied histories. Her research on aging and dance has contributed significantly to international discussions in dance and performance studies, particularly since the publication of The Aging Body in Dance in 2017. Her projects include Dance Archive Boxes at TPAM 2016; the Yvonne Rainer Performative Exhibition at Kyoto Art Theater Shunju-za in 2017; dramaturgical work with Wang Mengfan at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China in 2019; Dance Archive Box Berlin at the Akademie der Künste in 2020; and Noh to Trio A at the Nagoya Noh Theater in 2021.

Nakajima is frequently invited to speak at international academic and artistic events. She has delivered keynote lectures at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, the National Taiwan University of Arts, the University of British Columbia, and the Institute of Dance & Media in Korea. She has also initiated and organized major international symposia arising from her research, including The Aging Body in Dance in Berlin in 2012 and Tokyo in 2014, as well as the first Dramaturgs’ Meeting in Kyoto in 2024.

From 2022 to 2024, Nakajima served as Faculty Dramaturg at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada, supporting internationally selected dance artists and companies during their creative residencies. Since 2022, she has served as a mentor for Critical Practice in Contemporary Performance ([CP]³), in Singapore. She has served as a jury member for the Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre in Egypt (2020), Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, and the Keir Choreographic Award in Australia (2022).

Her publications include Dance Dramaturgy: Modes of Agency, Awareness and Engagement (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), The Aging Body in Dance: A Cross-Cultural Perspective (co-edited with Gabriele Brandstetter, Routledge, 2017), and Oi to Odori (Aging and Dancing, co-edited with Kikuko Toyama, Keiso Shobo, 2019). Her forthcoming book, Dance Dramaturgies of Aging, will be published by Routledge.

In 2021, she launched the bilingual website Dance Dramaturgy, which supports the exchange of knowledge and practices related to dance dramaturgy in Japan and internationally.

研究および芸術実践では、ダンスドラマトゥルギー、老いと踊り、インターカルチュラル・パフォーマンス、アーカイブと身体化された歴史の関係を主なテーマとしている。とりわけ2017年の The Aging Body in Dance 刊行以降、老いとダンスをめぐる研究は、国際的なダンス・パフォーマンス研究の議論と創作に大きな影響を与えている。主なプロジェクトに、Dance Archive Boxes(TPAM、2016年)、イヴォンヌ・レイナーを巡るパフォーマティヴ・エクシビジョン(京都芸術劇場 春秋座、2017年)、メンファン・ワンとのドラマトゥルギー作品(中国・烏鎮演劇祭、2019年)、Dance Archive Box Berlin(ベルリン芸術アカデミー、2020年)、能からTrio Aへ(名古屋能楽堂、2021年)などがある。

大学や劇場、国際会議にも数多く招聘され、ポルトガル・カトリック大学、国立台湾芸術大学、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学、韓国ダンス&メディア研究所などで基調講演を行っている。また、自身の研究を基盤とする国際シンポジウムを企画・主催しており、The Aging Body in Dance(ベルリン、2012年/東京、2014年)や、2024年に京都で開催した 第1回ドラマトゥルク・ミーティング などがある。

2022年から2024年まで、カナダの文化施設バンフ・センター・フォー・アーツ・アンド・クリエイティビティでファカルティ・ドラマトゥルクを務め、ダンスアーティストやカンパニーの滞在制作を支援した。2022年からは、シンガポールのプログラム Critical Practice in Contemporary Performance([CP]³) でメンターを務めている。また、2020年にはエジプトのカイロ国際実験演劇祭で審査員を務めたほか、シンガポールのエスプラネード・シアターズ・オン・ザ・ベイ、ならびにオーストラリアのキール・コレオグラフィック・アワード(2022年)でも審査員を務めた。
